On Monday, August 12th, Governor Mark Gordon led a crucial discussion about allowing concealed carry firearms in the Wyoming State Capitol. On October 9th, in the face of 87% opposition to the rules, the Wyoming State Building Commission proposed a rule that "would allow concealed carry of firearms in certain parts of the Wyoming Capitol complex."
Why does this matter?
- Political Violence is Rising: With tensions high, allowing firearms in the Capitol could create an atmosphere of intimidation and fear, ultimately stifling public discourse and participation.
- We Have Security for a Reason: Our current security measures are designed to protect both officials and constituents.
- The Capitol is not a Battlefield: The success of the American legislative process relies on elected officials being willing to participate in open debate without resorting to force or intimidation.
Who is affected?
- Legislators and other Public Officials: The presence of concealed firearms on the floor can potentially impact their ability to engage in open discussions and decision-making.
- Staff and Lobbyists: Some people cannot impact the decision on whether firearms should be allowed in the Capitol and still must work in the environment where they exist.
- Visitors and Members of the Public: The Capitol, testifying, and becoming part of the legislative process is already daunting and intimidating. For many, the addition of firearms will heighten their apprehension.
