ESPC kicked off the first in our six-part online candidate training series on July 6 with experienced communications strategist, former press secretary, and founder of Frontwood Strategies, Nell Callahan.
As part of Honing Your Campaign Message, Nell shared key insights and invaluable tips gleaned from her years of experience developing communications plans for political and advocacy campaigns.
She provided attendees not only with the tools necessary to craft a clear, concise, and persuasive campaign message, but also with examples of how to deploy those messages effectively. Using Wyoming State Auditor Kristi Racines’ successful 2018 campaign as one real-world example, Nell shared her message triangle. She demonstrated how a clearly defined problem, solution, and vision of success functions as the backbone of any effective communications strategy.
And while any good candidate needs a solid grasp of the policy issues they hope to be working on, the fact is—for better or worse—it’s not the wonky details or policy white papers that typically move voters to action. It’s a candidate’s ability to distill that information into a clear, brief message that communicates: This is who I am, this is what I stand for, and this is what you’ll get when I’m elected.
