Wyoming Workplace Fatalities

Grief, sorrow, loss trail in wake of job deaths

Too many people get killed or injured on the job in Wyoming. Many people know about Wyoming’s abysmal workplace fatality rate. Wyoming had the highest or second highest rate of worker fatalities in the nation from 2005-10. (West Virginia was highest in 2010) Wyoming’s 6-year average was at least double the average fatality rate in all but eight other states. The Wyoming fatality rate often is three-to-four times higher than the national rate. Troubling as they may be, those statistics are simply numbers. People and policy-makers must remember that each “fatality” represents the loss of a life and all the different possibilities, hopes, and plans that reside within every person. For families and friends, the shock of a workplace death quickly dissolves to sorrow and grief. The family of a killed worker also feels the painful economic loss and hardship when a worker’s income suddenly stops. In an effort to help bring the reality that lies behind workplace deaths, the Equality State Policy Center will post the obituaries of those who are tragically killed while on the job in Wyoming. We can do this only when we know about the death and have access to the obituary. We will depend upon the people of the state to help us identify these fatalities and connect us to the obituaries of the victims. Please help us.
