HB 81: Medical Malpractice Insurance Account
2006 Budget Session
Sponsor: Joint Judiciary Interim Committee
HB 81 extended the medical malpractice insurance loan program that was authorized by the 2004 special session of the Wyoming Legislature. The loan program was intended to assist physicians with medical malpractice insurance premiums, with a deadline for application for assistance of January 15, 2005.
HB 81 would extend the application period for these loans to March 30, 2007. The bill included an appropriation of $682,500 in general funds to pay for the anticipated loan requests.
Supporters favored the bill as a way to keep doctors practicing in Wyoming and to maintain an adequate system of health care opportunities for citizens across the state.
Opponents noted that the loan program has been little used since its inception, and didn't think that extending the program was useful or needed.
The House passed HB 81 unanimously. The Senate passed HB 81, 29-1, with Senator Cale Case (R-S25, Lander) casting the only NO vote.
